Martyr’s Day 2023, Shaheed Diwas 2023: Martyr’s Day also known as Shaheed Diwas is observed every year on January 30 to commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was assassinated on January 30 by Nathuram Godse in 1948.
Why Godse killed Gandhi?
Godse planned to assassinate Gandhi due to disagreement over partition of India into two nations -- India and Muslim's majority Pakistan. Godse fired bullets on Gandhi during an evening prayer ceremony at Birla House in Delhi.

Born on October 2, 1869, Porbandar, India, Mahatma Gandhi was a barrister, politician, social activist and writer who led the freedom struggle against the British rule.
Gandhi was the youngest child of his father’s fourth wife. His father—Karamchand Gandhi, who was the dewan (chief minister) of Porbandar, Gujarat under British suzerainty—did not have much in the way of a formal education.
Putlibai, Gandhi’s Mother was completely absorbed in religion and devoted her life to her time between her home and the temple.

Martyr’s Day: Remembering the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi strongly believed that non-violence is the way to attain freedom and he introduced the concept of Satyagraha to the people. He emphasised that the moral universe is one and that the morals of individuals, groups, and nations must be the same.
Gandhi was the leader of many freedom movements across the country, and he advocated peace instead of violence.
He is called the father of the nation because of his contributions.

PM Modi pays tributes to Mahatma Gandhi
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 75th death anniversary.
"I bow to Bapu on his Punya Tithi and recall his profound thoughts. I also pay homage to all those who have been martyred in the service of our nation. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten and will keep strengthening our resolve to work for a developed India," Modi tweeted.
